Why convert DWG to DXF?

DWG is AutoCAD's own format and many programs cannot read it. DXF is the exchange format that nearly every CAD, drawing, laser-cutting and CNC program opens.

Does the DXF keep layers and units?

Yes. The drawing itself is converted, not a picture of it, so layers, blocks and drawing units carry over. Objects that only an AutoCAD add-on understands may be left out.

Can I convert DXF back to DWG?

No, this tool converts only from DWG to DXF.

Is it free?

One conversion a day is free; the file carries a small line naming this site at the bottom. A pass lifts the limit and leaves the line out.

Which DWG versions work?

DWG files from AutoCAD and other CAD programs, including the AutoCAD 2018 format that current versions still save. If a file will not open, export it as DXF from the program that made it.
